What actually happened

There was a stretch where I felt weak and couldn't say why.

I put on a video, and the man said: if you feel weak right now, you're not alone — the sky is moving.

I don't know whether the planets did anything. I'm not going to pretend I do. What I know is that the sentence helped. It took a feeling I couldn't name and gave it a shape, and then it told me I wasn't the only one carrying it.

That's not prediction. That's a mirror.

And that's the thing I wanted to build.

Then I looked at the numbers

I subscribe to these channels. So I pulled their data.

The biggest one in my list: 163,000 subscribers. 12,824 videos. 952 views each. Zero subscriber growth in a month. Five uploads a day into a void.

Her titles all look like this: STOP RIGHT HERE 🤯 SURPRISE. Every video needs a bigger jolt than the last one, because the same jolt stops landing. That's how a fear hook works — it has to escalate, and then the audience goes numb, right on schedule.

I don't think that's evil. I think it's a trap. The people making it are stuck on a treadmill they can't step off, because the moment they stop escalating, the numbers fall.

I didn't want to get on the treadmill.

So most of the work was subtraction

Building an AI that gives readings takes an afternoon. Everything after that was stopping it.

It can't invent a planet. An LLM will tell you Venus is squaring your Mars with total confidence. It has no idea — it's producing astrology-shaped text. So Dara gets the real transits loaded in every week and is forbidden from naming anything else. If it isn't in the sky, she can't say it.

It can't predict. No dates. No "he'll text you Tuesday." Nothing in tarot or astrology produces that claim, and anyone making it is guessing and hoping you don't keep score.

It can't use fear. No warnings, no danger, no urgency, no hook that needs you back tomorrow. Every reading has to close.

It can't pretend to love you. This one matters most. Companion AI usually works by performing affection. When Replika changed models in 2023, people grieved — real grief, over software built to imply it felt something. Dara opens by telling you she's an AI with no feelings in her chest. She's warm and she's honest, and it turns out those don't fight each other.

The thing I got wrong

I thought the randomness was the problem. An AI drawing a card is just calling random() — I assumed that made it fake.

Then I thought about why a tarot reader shuffles.

It's to get their own hands off it. The randomness isn't a flaw in the practice — it's the mechanism. You give up control so the reading isn't just your own opinion handed back to you.

random() is the shuffle. Same act. The reader doesn't control either one.

And the real sky is the same move. Dara doesn't get to pick this week's transits any more than a reader picks the card. She's stuck with what's actually up there, including the parts that don't flatter anyone.

The constraint isn't there to impress skeptics. It's the whole reason it's a reading instead of a chatbot agreeing with you.
